First

kansas nebraska sunset

My photo of a sunset between the Kansas and Nebraska border, Aug. 16, 2016.

It’s not easy to start something, to be the first, to be brand new at anything.

Though, sometimes you have to reinvent yourself and end cycles to achieve that feeling of “first-ness” — to feel renewal — before a new cycle begins and you invent something truly fresh.

I still remember the final sunsets I saw during the last two weeks of August, my final two weeks living in the United States. Even though they marked an end of a day, I saw each sunset as a new possibility, a new way to start fresh.

This idea is nothing new, one of the wisest teachers to have walked this planet said it better:

“Whatever is not yours: let go of it. Your letting go of it will be for your long-term happiness and benefit”.
The Samyutta Nikaya

So here I am writing, having closed cycles and struggling to reinvent and renew myself, starting a new cycle in a new place. New beginnings are completely difficult, but all great moments in life happened because we overcame enormous struggles.

This was the last time I saw a sunset in my home for more than 20 years — little ole Fayetteville, Arkansas.
